New book by Steve Pinker on violence

It’s friday, so it’s time to post in english…

This time I don’t have that much to say, but to point to these reviews of the new book by Steve Pinker. See Tyler Cowen reviewing here, and John Gray and Chris Bertram (on the Crooked Timber). I didn’t read the book, so I can’t say much more, but I find amusing that Tyler Cowen found the book worth reading, and the others found the book full of unsicentific and weak arguments (actually, since Chris Bertram didn’t read it, he doesn’t count). Based on the critical review, it seems that the book really has some crap, like this excerpt (by Bertram, not Pinker):

it is pretty troubling to juxtapose “Middle East slave trade” 7th-19th centuries (9th on the list and, according to Pinker the third worst atrocity in history) with “Second world war” (9th worst atrocity). Because, well, one was an “event” of around 1300 years in duration and the other lasted (depending on start and finish dates) around six (6) years

If anyone read the book, please share your view of the book with us…
